The concept of the word “verse” in general and “miraculous verses” in particular is an issue which the religious scholar faces with while seeking the Quranic roots of miracle. How can the Qur'anic concept of “verse” be reconstructed from the uses of this term in Qur'an? What is the relationship between the verbal concept of miracle and Quranic concept of verse? In this article we attempt to investigate the famous miracle theory, as well as compare the Quranic conception of “verse” and the verbal impression of “miracle” to demonstrate that the main properties of the idiomatic term of “miracle” are not consistent with the notion of a “particular verse” coming from prophets' stories. Subsequently, using the uses of the term “verse” in Qur'an, we reconstruct the concept of this term based on Qur'anic verses. Furthermore, incompatibility between the Quranic notion of the “verse” and the verbal notion of “miracle” would be illustrated through presentation of idiomatic, conceptual components of miracle and its Qur'anic examples. At final position this article recommends the authenticity of the theological implications for the term of “verse”. Accordingly, miracle as a type of verse has the same function. One of the advantages of this hypothesis is the need to re-read and re-interpret some verses of Qur'an, such as Challenge of the Quran (Tahaddi), as well as the need to distinguish between theological and epistemological issues of Qur'an.
