From one perspective, language, in general can be divided into oral or spoken and written. One kind of oral or spoken language is rhetorical language; that is, a style of discourse which is popular among preachers and orators. From another perspective, language can be divided into common and special conventions. This paper intends to investigate AyatullahMa’efat’s theory that language of the Quran is oral and rhetorical. In some readings, he regards the language of the Quran as a common convention and in some others as a special convention, and of course, he does not observe any conflicts between the twohence treating them as one entity. In the last years of his life, AyatullahMa’refat described the language of the Quran as oral or spoken; to put it precisely the described the language of the Quran as rhetorical. Yet, it seems that he does not find any conflicts between language as a common convention and rhetorical language. After all, some the most important characteristics of rhetorical language that he mentions are the reliance on the mental backgrounds of the audience, the existence of apostrophe and transition, and mentioning external realities.
