Human dignity is one of the most fundamental concepts in contemporary legal and ethical systems. The Holy Quran, in verses such as “And We have certainly honored the sons of Adam,” affirms the inherent dignity of man, and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights also introduces inherent dignity as the foundation of human rights in its first article. The main issue of this article is the feasibility of a comparative study between the concept of inherent dignity of man in the Quran and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The research findings show that there are fundamental commonalities, including inherent dignity, equality, and non-discrimination, between these two sources, but the main challenges can be categorized into three areas: the origin of dignity (divine in the Quran versus secular in the Declaration), the scope of dignity (absolute in the Quran versus conditional on public order in the Declaration), and the guarantor of dignity (Sharia in the Quran versus international law in the Declaration). This article uses an analytical-comparative approach to show that despite fundamental differences in principles, practical commonalities are possible at the level of common norms (such as the prohibition of torture and the preservation of human dignity). In other words, it is possible to agree on objective instances of dignity without resolving fundamental differences at the level of theological principles.
