This study, without reducing the Prophetic tradition and Sīra to contemporary standards or transforming its form into a transhistorical pattern, asks how contemporary generations might enter into dialogue with the Prophet’s example amid their crises.
Drawing on Jan Assmann’s concept of “cultural memory,” it regards the emergence and mission of Muhammad, peace be upon him, and the formation of the first community as a memory-generating event transmitted through the Qur’an, narrative, ritual, and interpretation. After examining rigid approaches to the Sīra, judging the Prophet by contemporary standards, and its modernization, the study turns to Prophetic exemplarity as reflected in his companions—“those who were with him” (alladhīna maʿahu).
The study argues that the Companions constitute the mirror of Prophetic exemplarity. Their experience reveals the Prophet as a transparent medium of the divine message, who does not stand between humanity and God but leads it toward a direct relationship with God.
From this perspective, taʾassī does not mean reproducing the forms of the Prophet’s life, but aligning oneself with the tawḥīdic telos of his call: for leaders, serving humanity while releasing it into a direct relationship with God; and for contemporary humanity, returning to God amid the “hiddenness of God” and rupture of sacred experience. Thus, studying the Sīra becomes a dialogue with a memory-generating event and a reconsideration of Prophetic exemplarity.
